Tour Details Ameca River Birds
On the outskirts of the Puerto Vallarta we find a quiet town called La Desembocada. This village, located at the foot of the mountains in the valley formed by the Ameca River, is mainly devoted to agriculture, with corn, pumpkin, sorghum and mangoes as the main harvests. Its location and the presence of small rivers and streams, as well as farmland, make this place an ideal place for bird watching. The area is considered a tropical sub-deciduous forest, so we can see the crane hawk, the elegant quail, as well as various species of warblers, woodpeckers, flycatchers, hummingbirds, trogons, parrots, among others.
The Ameca River divides the states of Nayarit and Jalisco. Its channel ends in the Banderas Bay, forming a wide area of wetlands, which attract both marine and terrestrial birds, either to feed or rest. On the beach that forms its mouth we find the Boca de Tomates estuary, site where we can find white ibis, herons, egrets, sandpipers, terns, and, with a bit of luck, a kingfisher or the common black hawk.

Meet with your guide and the rest of the birdwatchers in our office at Marina Vallarta, where we board our comfortable vehicle to go inland, to the east of the Bay (any other meeting point will be confirmed once you have scheduled your tour).
We will drive inland through the Ameca Valley, leaving behind the city. On the way we’ll make a stop to enjoy a light continental breakfast and start with our bird watching. Later, we continue our route by a secondary road, making several stops in different places to look for different species of birds.
About two and a half hours later we will start our return to go to the coast now. We will pass through a mangrove area and on the beach, we will finish the observations of the day and fill our species list while enjoying a local snack.
